LIST TWO: Tiph’s Top 5 Streaming TV Shows + Food Pairing Recipes
Well, we all know our couches/TVs are going to get a good workout over the next few weeks, let’s have some fun in the kitchen while we’re at it!
5: The Marvelous Mrs Maisel – Available on Amazon Prime (3 seasons so far)
Set in the late 1950s, Miriam Maisel (Midge to her friends) is a housewife living on the Upper West Side of New York City. When her wanna-be stand up husband leaves her, Midge starts her own stand up career. It’s a super fun show, full to the brim with banter, and a fantastic cast including Rachel Brosnan, Tony Shaloub and Alex Borstein.
Pair with: Two Birds Sunset Ale and a delicious beef brisket, just like this one https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/beef_brisket/
(Bonus points if you can get your hands on a Pyrex to make this one in!)
4: Rick and Morty – Available on Netflix (4 seasons so far)
If you haven’t seen Rick and Morty by now, good news! You’ve got plenty of time to watch it! Rick Sanchez is the world’s – no wait – the universe’s smartest scientist, living with his daughter’s family – Beth Smith – accomplished horse surgeon, her husband Gerry Smith (…loser…), and her children Summer and Morty. Giant glowing rocks, murderous aliens, the council of Ricks – it’s a wild ride that’s well worth watching!
Pair with: Two Birds Taco Cerveza + Chicken nuggets with szechuan sauce like these ones https://www.bingingwithbabish.com/recipes/2017/8/29/szechuansaucerevisited
3: Brooklyn Nine Nine – Available on Netflix (6 seasons + Season 7 currently streaming on SBS on Demand)
Easily one of my favourite streaming shows out there! Spend a few days hanging out in Brooklyn’s 99th Precinct with Jake, Amy, Charles, Terri, Rosa, Gina, Hitchcock and Scully and Ray Holt himself. With regular guests such as Keira Sedwick (Madeline Wunch, grackle), Craig Robinson (Doug Judy, the Pontiac Bandit), Ken Marino (CJ, just call him CJ) and Dean Winters (The Vulture – I hate that guy), you’re in for a lot of fun, with some of the best cold opening scenes there are! (My favourite is easily Season 5, Episode 17).
Pair it with: Two Birds Passionfruit Summer Ale + A homemade pizza bar, just make sure you measure the sauce to base ratio, along with the mouthfeel. https://www.bhg.com/recipe/pork/pizza-bar-for-a-crowd/
Charles would be proud!
2: The Simpsons- Available on Disney+ (29 seasons!)
Guys, there’s 29 seasons! Settle in and watch everyone’s favourite yellow family – Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart and Maggie + a cast of thousands – this one alone should get you through at least a week or two!
Pair it with: Two Birds Pale Ale + Marge’s famous pork chops! https://raymonds.recipes/marge-simpsons-porkchops-recipe/
I serve mine with mashed potatoes and broccoli with cheese sauce – yum!
1: Buffy The Vampire Slayer – Available on Stan (7 seasons)
Hands down my favourite show! Come hang with Buffy, Xander, Willow, Cordy and Giles as they try and navigate going to high school on a hell mouth, and saving the world, a lot. There’s a musical episode, and episode with almost no words, and episode with no music and lots and lots of vampires! If you’re really keen you can also watch Angel – the 5 season spin off about a vampire who drives a convertible around LA – that guy sure has a death wish!
Pair it with: Two Birds IPA + this blooming onion! https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchen/almost-famous-bloomin-onion-recipe-2012467
Here’s a few honorable mentions, just in case you need MORE TV and food!
30 Rock – Amazon Prime, Stan (7 Seasons) + Sunset Ale + Meatball Subs! http://allrecipes.com.au/recipe/19218/meatball-and-provolone-sandwich.aspx
Community – Stan, Netflix (6 Seasons) + Pale Ale + Tater Tots
Mad Men – Netflix (6 Seasons) + Lots of whiskey. Just drink lots of whiskey.
